# Overview

> A Brain is a secure, private workspace for a related set of documents, built around a client, a project, a team, or your whole firm. VirtualBrain reads and indexes whatever you add so it can be searched and cited, and you decide who it reaches, from one colleague to the whole firm.

## Why Brains matter

Everything in VirtualBrain starts with a Brain. Build one around a single client, a live project, a team's shared know-how, or a company-wide reference library. It becomes the evidence base behind every [sourced answer](/features/chats/sourced-answers) and [App](/features/apps/overview) output you produce from it.

A Brain holds more than source files. You can also save the outputs you produce [back into it as deliverables](/features/brains/creating-brains).

## When to create a Brain

Create a Brain whenever a body of documents deserves its own boundary: a new engagement kicks off, a data room lands, a coverage sector needs a standing reference library, or a team wants its collective know-how in one queryable place.

  **Organize Brains by engagement.** Create one Brain per engagement, client, or clearly bounded topic, rather than one giant Brain for everything. Tighter scope means cleaner answers, easier sharing, and confidentiality boundaries that map to how your work is actually structured. Name Brains consistently (client, project, period) so the whole team can find them.
